Property for Sale in La Oliva, Fuerteventura

Continuing inland (although you are never far from the sea here!) through Villaverde, we will reach the village of La Oliva, home to the Ayuntamiento (council) for the municipality of La Oliva. The Ayuntamiento is responsible for the social services, cultural and environmental issues, and local government. They fund many of the cultural exhibitions and fiestas that are held in the municipality each year.

Historical buildings of architectural, political and religious significance include the 17th century building ‘La Casa del Los Coroneles’ (The Colonels’ House). This mansion was residence to the military governors of the island. Also prevalent is the church in the town centre (Parroquiade Nuestra Selliora de Candelaria), which is dedicated to the Virgen de la Candelaria. A festival is celebrated on 2nd February each year to give thanks to the virgin for delivering the town of Candelaria (a municipality in South America) from a plague which swept through it and took countless lives. A large alter piece of ‘The Last Judgment’ painted by Juan Carreño de Miranda (1614-1685) can be seen in the church. This artist was employed as the court painter for Philip 1V at the Alcázar in Madrid and was later commissioned for a portrait by Charles II.

Also to be found in La Oliva is the Corn Museum (La Cilla) depicting the importance that agriculture once had on the economic existence of the islanders and the art centre (Centro de Arte de Canario) exhibiting displays from contemporary Canarian artists.
