We leave Lajares in Fuerteventura heading south,(straight on at the roundabout) and turn right at the next major junction (FV10) to head towards El Roque and the popular resort of El Cotillo, which is just 12km further on. Passing the tranquil village of El Roque and the pretty traditional Canarian properties on our right to head towards the growing fishing village of El Cotillo in Fuerteventura with some excellent El cotillo Properties. Popular for it’s wonderful lagoons, beaches and private little coves, parts of El Cotillo are designated sanctuaries for a variety of wildlife. Snorkelling and surfing are popular sports here and both residents and holidaymakers camp here during the summer months to enjoy the spectacular scenery and wonderful sunsets that easily match those of the famous Key West in Florida.

El Cotillo has extremely strong currents and so swimming can be dangerous in certain areas, but the lagoons are safe enough for even small children, if supervised. There are two harbours, and both are surrounded by an array of lovely restaurants to enjoy a leisurely lunch and hide away from the midday sun or relax over a cocktail before dinner. At the new harbour you will find the Fortaleza del Toston an 18th century castle, which now houses a number of exhibitions throughout the year. The lighthouse at the far end of the village is a warning to seafarers, of the treacherous rocks that lie hidden beneath the cobalt ocean and white frothy surf and at certain times of the year a particular type of seaweed drifts in to the lagoons, giving the optical illusion that the water is the colour of rosé wine.

El Cotillo also enjoys a number of festivals throughout the year and plays host to the Fuerteventura Music Festival which attracts some of the top bands in Spain.
