Property for Sale in Vega de Rio Palma - Fuerteventura

Taking the FV30 out of Betancuria and through the village of El Fucarón we take a right off the main road and toward Vega de Rio Palma. The valley and hamlet of the same name are considered to be amongst the most enchanting areas on the island.
The clear waters of the now dried up river bed once flowed through the village and the reasons for the drought are open to debate. Some say the climate and ecology of the region dictated this decline, whilst others say the inhabitant Mahorero farmers contributed to the catastrophe by cutting down trees, believing them to absorb too much of the precious rains. Nowadays of course it is known that trees contribute to the stability of the water table. The nearby reservoir is seldom full now though.
Beyond the dam is a small white chapel; Ermita de Virgin de la Peña and a painting hangs at the alter depicting the discovery of a statue of the saint. The statue was brought to the church by Bethencourt and was later saved from destruction at the hands of pirates because it had been so securely hidden that it remained so until the 17th century. Every year on the third Sunday in September many devout followers gather here in a pilgrimage to give thanks to their saint and afterward, a fiesta is held.
There is a restaurant in the restored 17th century farmhouse nearby, which is reported to be one of the best on the island, so a visit to the area holds many delights.
